As Fall family photo sessions are Booking and approaching…

now is the time to start thinking about putting together family outfits. If you are struggling on where to start, choose one outfit that your really like first and then build your own collection from there. For example, you or your daughter may wear a floral dress and the colors for other family members may be pulled from that dress. Tip: bring that dress to the store with you so you can find other outfits that fit the theme. Overall, the family should be in clothes that compliment each other, not match as it will look unnatural. Here are some family session outfit

YES…do this!

  • Wear what you feel comfortable and confident in!

  • Layer and add textures…it adds dimension and depth (some examples, cable knits, lace, chambray, wool, corduroy, faux fur, tweed)

  • Patterns are great in moderation. Try one statement piece such as a floral dress and then a subtle pattern such as a little polka dot dress for your daughter; the rest of the family in simple outfits.

  • Include accessories such as, jewelry, belts, scarves, vests, headbands, etc.

  • Try on ALL outfits chosen for the photo shoot. There’s nothing like finding out clothes don’t fit during a shoot.

What to avoid:

  • White, black, fluorescent and neon colors

  • Slogans and logos

  • Tiny plaid and patterns (these don’t translate well in-camera)

  • Athletic shoes and shoes that have a lot of scuffs

  • Heels or uncomfortable shoes to walk in the grass as most of the sessions are located in forest preserves

  • Everybody matching

Helpful tip! Head into your local clothing store (β€œgo-to” recommendations below) and mention you’re styling for a family photo session. If you already have your children’s outfits picked out, bring pictures of those as well! The store stylists would be happy to pick out options for you - and free of charge!

Some of my β€œgo-to” stores…For women: Nordstrom, Anthropologie, Evereve, Bevello (in Naperville, IL),  J. Crew, and Gap. For children: Zara, Janie & Jack, Mini Boden, Nordstrom, Gap Kids, Hanna Andersson. For men: Nordstrom,  Bonobos, Ted Baker, Gap, and Banana Republic.

Here are some other examples of families who did a great job coordinating outfits for family photo sessions:
